Rangers Weigh Up Move for Hull City Winger Abu Kamara

Sky Sports report that Rangers considering a move for Hull City’s dynamic winger Abu Kamara as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the 2025-26 Scottish Premiership season.

The 21-year-old, who joined the Tigers from Norwich City for a reported £4.5 million on transfer deadline day in August 2024, has caught the attention of the Ibrox club following a mixed but promising debut season in the Championship. With Rangers aiming to close the gap on rivals Celtic and compete in Europe, Kamara’s pace, versatility, and proven track record in League One make him an intriguing target for manager Russell Martin.

Kamara’s Journey: From Portsmouth Hero to Hull City Star

Abu Kamara, born in London, rose through Norwich City’s academy, joining at age 10 and making six senior appearances for the Canaries. His breakout came during a loan spell at Portsmouth in the 2023-24 season, where he played a pivotal role in their League One title triumph, scoring eight goals and providing 10 assists in 46 appearances. His performances earned praise from Pompey boss John Mousinho, who described him as a “huge” asset, and former Aston Villa playmaker Lee Hendrie, who told Football League World that Kamara’s return to Portsmouth would be a “smart move” due to his fit within their system.

Kamara’s move to Hull City in August 2024 was a significant step up, with the Tigers beating out competition from Portsmouth and Rangers, who were linked with a £2 million bid for the winger earlier that summer. Despite a challenging first season under managers Tim Walter and Ruben Selles, Kamara showed flashes of brilliance, scoring five goals and providing three assists in 36 Championship appearances, including a standout brace in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Leeds United. However, his campaign was marred by inconsistency and a controversial social media incident following a 1-0 loss to Middlesbrough, where he faced criticism for a perceived lack of effort and an ill-timed Instagram post congratulating a former teammate.

Why Rangers Are Interested

Rangers’ interest in Kamara comes as the club seeks to add width and dynamism to their squad. After finishing second in the Scottish Premiership and missing out on the title to Celtic, Martin is under pressure to restore the faith among the Rangers crowd. Kamara’s ability to play on either flank, combined with his directness and goal-scoring threat, aligns with Martin's preference for versatile attackers who can stretch defences.

The 21-year-old’s pace and flair, honed during his time at Portsmouth, make him a potential fit for Rangers’ high-intensity style. His experience in the Championship, a step above League One, suggests he could adapt to the demands of Scottish football, where physicality and quick transitions are key. Additionally, Kamara’s England Under-20 international status and his desire for regular game time could make Ibrox an appealing destination.

Challenges and Competition

Despite Rangers’ interest, securing Kamara’s signature won’t be straightforward. Hull City, now managed by Sergej Jakirovic following Selles’ departure, are keen to retain the winger, who is under contract until June 2028 with an option for an additional year. The Tigers’ initial £4.5 million investment, coupled with their reluctance to sell unless a significant offer is made, could complicate negotiations.

Portsmouth, where Kamara remains a fan favourite, are also eyeing a reunion, with Mousinho admitting the club would “love” to bring him back if Hull’s financial situation forces a sale. The Blues’ limited budget, however, makes a permanent deal unlikely, with a loan move potentially more feasible. Other Championship clubs and European sides could also enter the race, given Kamara’s age and upside, though no concrete interest beyond Rangers and Portsmouth has been reported.

What’s Next for Kamara and Rangers?

For Kamara, a move to Rangers could provide a platform to showcase his talents on a bigger stage, with the added incentive of regular European football. His ability to contribute goals and assists, as demonstrated at Portsmouth, could make him a fan favourite at Ibrox. However, Rangers must weigh whether Kamara’s Championship struggles reflect a need for further development or a temporary dip.
